Growing up as a mixed (Black-Latina and African American & white) and a nerd, it was difficult to find exactly myself on screen. I mean there were Latin and Black representation but even that representation was here and there so imagine finding that combination on screen in sci/fi fantasty?
It curious because when I do find that representation, it is usually hidden behind pounds of make-up or hours of CGI, however, I do think those roles are powerful too in moving us forward.
I wanted to share some of the shows I enjoyed throughout the years

Charmed (2018)
A reboot of the show of 1998, the show continues of the same vain with three sisters who are the Charmed Ones. This tale follows Macey Vaughn (later replaced by Mikaela), Mel Vera, and Maggie Vera on their adventures defending the magical world from demons, curses and all thing scarey in between.

The show had so much potential but I feel like some shows on the CW catered to a certain audience and didnt follow through on some edgier concepts. Many of plots felt relevant and fun to a new generation but felt s

Euphoria
Where to begin? The show follows Rue (Zendaya) who deals (or not deal) with drug addiction and her various friends' not so average life in high school. With each character, we follow their  struggle to find who they are, accepteance in self and try to overcome their odds.

Rating? Love it
Not only is the show riveting with the actors depictions of serious issues of trouble youth but visually is STUNNING - from make-up and hair to cinematography. Both Zendaya and Storm Reid, plays Zendaya's younger sister, are biracial (African American and European Descent) which is represented in casting of their parents.

Powerless
Although short-lived, this office comedy explored the superhero world through the eyes of their citizens. A warm friendly comedy with a sharp look at the day-to-day realities.

The show stars Vanessa Hudgens who is Filipina as well as Irish and Native American and Danny Pudi, who is half Indian and half Polish.

This show was gone too soon in my opinion. It was fun to see the off color villains they incorporated and other DC heroes.

Shadow and Bone
Dark forces conspire against orphan mapmaker Alina Starkov when she unleashes an extraordinary power that could change the fate of her war-torn world.

Alina Starkov is played by Jesse Mei Li who is half English and Half Chinese and plays a mixed character on the show being half Shu.

I love that a mixed person plays a mixed character, however, she is hated for her mixed ancestry by most due to past societal conflicts. Thankfully how the show is set up, she is what the destined outsider to save them all.

Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse
Taking the world by storm, not that Storm, Miles Morales has become a much loved addition to the Spider-verse. As the story goes, he is bitten by a radioactive spider and develops powers that transform him into Spider-Man. He meets Peter Parker, and others and realizes he must use his skills to battle the evil Kingpin, who can open portals to other universes and pull different versions of Spider-Man into our world.

Raised by his father and mother who is African American and Puerto Rican, Miles is a mixed character I see so much of my self in that my dad is biracial and my mom Afro-Latina. To speaking different languages with each parent without translations to culturally mixed families, this one of my favorite films as a mixed person and a geek - the animation is brilliant!

Teen Wolf
Know for its exploration of lore and horror set in an high school setting, Teen Wolf was  that me and my friends enjoyed at our weekly gathering. Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) and his best friend, Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O'Brien) are your typical best friends getting through average high school experience but nothing is normal after after Scott's werewolf bite especially in Beacon Hills.

Rating? Loved It
Like I said, my friends and I watched this show weekly - we loved the exploration of lore and followed a mixed lead. He is of Mexican (mother) and British Isles (father) descent. What's important to note is that the show aknowledges different creatures, monsters and beings beyond American lore and incorporated it into the storytelling and didn't settle them as the baddie of the week. But don't get me wrong, I love that - Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire (TV series) fan here before knowing those issues.
These are shows that I have been able to watch so far. Have a recommendation? Drop in the comment below.
